About Neon

Who is Neon? Neon is a colorful chameleon who is an English Language Learner that changes the colors of his skin.

What is so special about Neon? Neon the chameleon has a special talent:

Depending on the way he feels, his colors will begin to change, from the top of his head to the tip of his tail!

What does happen when Neon feels happy? When he feels happy and excited, he turns bright green! Other times, when he feels frustrated, his colors become dull and faded.

About the book

This is the story of Neon, a young chameleon who is an English Language Learner (ELL). Through his school day, Neon describes the most common challenges ELLs face when entering mainstream classrooms for the first time. Neon’s internal dialog about the challenges he experiences and how he feels about them becomes the central plot for the story. Neon the Chameleon is learning English at school is a children’s book with a message for adults!

Why do teachers need this book?

Educators know that teaching ELLs is an art that requires dedication, education, connection, and support. The challenges are multiple, and this book will help teachers understand how to adapt instruction to better support the English Language Learner’s emotional and academic needs.

Slide The Author

Tulia Finucci grew up in Venezuela and came to the U.S. in 1994. She has a degree in child development and a master’s degree in social work. Since the beginning of her career over twenty years ago, Tulia has trained and coached teachers of English language learners and supported immigrant families. Tulia is passionate about her work and will continue to write about the beauty and the resilience of immigrant children and families and the many other subjects related to social justice that affect all of us.

Vanessa Balleza is a children's story illustrator and plastic artist, with a special ability to capture warm moments with vivid details and imagination. Her motivation is to involve adults and children in fostering a lifetime love of reading and art by using the power of imagination and creativity. Her work shows magical elements within an existing world.
